Finished watching the BBC2’s King George and Queen Mary: the Royals Who Rescued the Monarchy and I enjoyed it as I am a huge history dork. Picked up several fun facts:

  • King George V, who looks so much like his first cousin, Tsar Nicholas II, renamed the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the House of Windsor due to strong anti-German sentiment in the United Kingdom during World War I. So the present-day royals may be British, but they are mostly of German extraction.
  • The king wasn’t the sharpest. Biographers described him as having the “intellectual capacity of a railway porter” and he “confused in later life the words highbrow and eyebrow”. lol
  • Queen Mary, who looks like her favorite granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth, hated Wallis Simpson sfm.

I became even more interested in this part of British history because Downton Abbey, though fictional, is set during the reign of George V, from 1910-1936. This gave me a clearer idea of the spirit of the times.
